KWAT envisions that
“All forms of discrimination are eliminated in Kachin State; all women are empowered to participate in decision making at a local, national and international level; and all Kachin children have the opportunity to fulfil their potential.”

KWAT was formed in Chiang Mai on the 9th September 1999 based on urgent need for women to solve their own problems following the increased number of Kachin people fleeing the deteriorating political, economic and social situation and increased problems in Thailand. KWAT advocates at national and international level, to raise awareness about the human rights situation including women and political situation in Burma.

KWAT is a founding member of the Women's League of Burma (WLB). In addition, KWAT is also a member of Network for Human Right Documentation Burma (ND-Burma) to document human right violations in Burma.
